Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

By: Jane Beckmann, MSW, LCSW

CBT is a structured collaborative effort between client and therapist aimed at problem solving and modifying distorted thinking. Cognitive therapy is a useful method treating anxiety and depression. It helps the client recognize automatic (negative) thoughts and come up with behaviors and alternative thinking that challenge those thinking patterns.

Keeping written records of thoughts and the emotions they conjure is used in CBT. A client is taught to record his automatic thoughts and to counter them with alternative thinking that is more realistic and motivational.

CBT can be used in conjunction with medication. Data indicates Therapy enhances a person’s response to a drug.

Cognitive therapy teaches us to view ourselves with more compassion, to control painful moods and self-defeating behavior, and as we feel better about ourselves, to experience more energy

and control in our lives.
